Carving Essentials: Introduction to Linocut

This introductory linocut workshop is a hands-on opportunity to learn the foundations of relief printmaking in a welcoming, professional studio environment.

You’ll learn how to use traditional carving tools to create expressive marks and bold imagery, along with essential inking techniques to produce clean, crisp prints.

You’ll then print your work using our rare 1860 Albion Press, experiencing the unique satisfaction of pulling your own handmade prints.

What You’ll Learn:
- Carving Techniques: gain hands-on experience with a range of carving tools and explore their unique mark-making capabilities.
- Surface Exploration: experiment with different carving surfaces and discover the materials that best suit your style.
- Relief Inking Basics: learn inking techniques to produce clean, crisp prints.
- Press Technique: use our rare 1860 Albion Press to print your designs onto paper with beautiful results.

The workshop is taught by award-winning printmaker Renee Hadlow at The Armarie Room, a professional printmaking studio known for its heritage presses and traditional approach to print. Whether you’re curious to try printmaking for the first time or looking to build your skills, this is a rare opportunity to learn in an authentic working studio, guided by an experienced tutor in a supportive and creative environment.
Event Details
Timing: Full day (9am - approx 5pm)

Price: $172.50

Value of included Materials (approx): $30.00

Materials provided: Carving tools and safety boards, printing plates, printing ink and rollers, paper and drawing supplies, printing press, aprons and gloves.

What to bring: Bring your creative energy and some images or drawings that you would like to work from. Tea, coffee and biscuits are available in the studio but please bring your lunch. Founders Café will be open if you’d like to purchase food or drinks.

Wear closed-toe shoes and some old clothes. Long hair should be tied back and jewellery removed when operating the printing presses.

You will leave with: A selection of handmade works of art.

Renee Hadlow

Renee is an award-winning printmaker and letterpress printer, and the founder of The Armarie Room, a professional printmaking studio dedicated to traditional print processes. Her work combines contemporary design with heritage presses, and has been recognised with multiple Pride In Print awards for excellence in letterpress printing.

Renee has over 25 years’ experience as an educator, teaching nationally and internationally across private, public, and tertiary settings. She has written and developed numerous courses and now specialises in teaching printmaking workshops for both adults and young people. Through The Armarie Room, she offers rare access to historic printmaking equipment within a contemporary working studio.

Renee is also a qualified ESOL teacher, with extensive experience supporting diverse learners.
